A staple in the lighting professional's toolkit, the LED high bay is a popular and versatile commercial LED indoor lighting fixture often used in retail, gymnasium, convention center, industrial, and warehouse LED lighting projects.

Though there are many variations in style, quality, and price point in the LED lighting market, LED high bay lights are generally divided into two major categories: the circular or UFO LED high bay and the linear LED high bay. Each category has its own set of characteristics that makes it more suitable for a specific type of project.

The quick rule of thumb Use UFO fixtures for open, high-ceiling areas that need broad, uniform output. Use linear fixtures where the room itself is linear: rows, aisles, production lines, racks, workbenches, or retrofit layouts.

Because of their perfectly symmetrical shape, round high bays create a uniform light output on all sides of the fixture. They are more suited for illuminating large open spaces with high ceilings where it is important to get consistent, even light coverage, such as gymnasiums and convention centers.

The Linear High Bay features a rectangular design that creates a focused, directional light output. Intended to be mounted in rows, these fixtures excel at illuminating long, structured spaces such as aisles, production lines, and workbenches.

Round coverage versus row-by-row control.

The right answer depends less on which fixture looks better and more on how the light needs to land on the floor, shelves, equipment, and work areas.
